Our Additional Needs Activity are really popular events, so here are some popular questions we get asked about them
1. How do these session works? During the school holidays, we run specific additional needs days. Our additional needs sessions are designed as mini taster sessions. You get a two hour time slot throughout the day and all of our sessions are private. This means we can tailor the session to individual needs and abilities. The actual activity will last around an hour long. The extra hour is used for getting changed (before and after the activity) walking into venues, processing information etc.
2. What activities can you provide? We run our Additional Needs days in Climbing, Paddle boarding, Kayaking, Coasteering and Gorge Walking. All of these activities you get a qualified instructor for the whole session. With Climbing, we provide two instructors, one to belay and an extra instructor to climb up next to you, giving you as much support and guidance as you need.
3. How much are these activities? We run these sessions at reduced rate to make them financially accessible, as well as accessible for those with additional needs. Each session is £30 each, half price for a part taking parent.
4. Do parents have to take part? It depends on the activity! Parents have to take part with Gorge Walking and Coasteering. For paddle boarding and kayaking this is optional. If you don't part-take, than we will just stick to the lagoons and won't go far. If you join us, then if weather conditions allow, we can go on a journey. Why not join in? These are great activities to do together as a family.
5. Can my child come with a Support Worker instead? Unfortunately, all under 18s have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (foster carer). Support workers don't count as legal guardians. For our insurance, you have to be with a parent - there's no way round this. Sorry!
6. What types of additional needs can you take out on an adventure? Our mission is about making adventures accessible for all! Our main client base are people with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, Fragile X Syndrome and rare genetic conditions. We have taken people out with Phelan-McDermind Syndrome, Dravet Syndrome, mobility issues and more. Please send us a message with as much detail as possible and we will see what we can do. We want everyone to be able to access the outdoors and this is something we are very passionate about. Unfortunately we are not a centre, so do not have access to hoists. We meet people at the venues.
7. What if the weather is not great? Safety is paramount and we would never run a session if we, as the Owners and Instructors, consider it to be dangerous. We are based in Eryri / Snowdonia and unfortunately, it does rain a lot here! We can still go climbing in the pouring rain and if its windy (not stormy). We can still run our water activities if it's windy. The lagoons are really sheltered and as mini taster sessions, we don't need to leave them for these sessions. We may have to cancel Gorge walking sessions after prolonged rain, as the water levels are too high. The decision is down to us.
8. What happens if Climb Snowdonia needs to cancel? We will try and give you as much notice as possible, but it may be that morning to see what water levels are like etc. If we have to cancel, we would offer you an alternative date or a full refund.
9. What happens if I need to cancel? Unfortunately our Terms and Conditions state we need 4 weeks notice to rearrange a date. We do understand people become ill, so do let us know and we will try our best to rearrange you, but we can't make any promises. These sessions book out in advanced due to their popularity and we are a small business who need to make a living. You can always leave it to see if we have last minute availability if you want to have good weather.
10. I've been before and want to try a different venue out. Can we do this? Awesome! If you want to go to a different venue, or higher up the gorge, than you can book onto one of our standard taster sessions. We still run these are private sessions. They do cost more, but you get more time! We have access to great climbing and coasteering venues that we can take you too. Gorge walking, we don't tend to go far, so we can take you a lot further up the gorge too on one of our standard sessions.
11. Do you provide all the equipment? Climb Snowdonia provides wetsuits and all of the safety equipment. For watersport activities, you would just need to bring with you swimwear for under a wetsuit, shoes that will get wet (old trainers are best. Beach style shoes are not ideal while gorge walking or coasteering), a towel and comfy clothes for afterwards. You are of course welcome to bring your own wetsuit! All of our wetsuits we wash and clean between courses, but can't guarantee they will be 100% dry! You would also need to wear a pair of shorts over the top of a wetsuit to protect the wetsuit from rocks- it's cheaper to replace shorts versus wetsuits! We can provide these, if you don't have anything suitable. For kayaking and paddle boarding, you don't have to wear a wetsuit. You are welcome to wear gym type clothes; items which dry quickly when wet. Jeans, hoddies and joggers are not allowed. They hold too much water when wet.
12. I can't do your date. Can we arrange another one? We run our specific additional needs days at a massively reduced rate from our standard taster sessions. We may put another day on if we fully book but not necessarily. If you want a certain day, you can book one of our standard taster sessions instead.
13. Who will be running the sessions? Climb Snowdonia is run by Jess and Sam, a husband and wife team. All of our sessions will be run by one of us!
14. How shall we book? Once we have released the dates, send us an email with your preferred date and time slot. We will answer people in order of receiving your messages. Email or Facebook Messenger is best as we see these on our personal phones. Although we try to check our work phone often, it's left in our office, so we don't always get WhatsApp/ voicemail messages straight away, especially this time of year as we are busy running sessions
